For those of us who work in manufacturing, we already know how much the industry has changed from what was ‘traditional’ factory work. But, it’s often hard to convey those changes, and dispel many myths, about today’s manufacturing operations. With the introduction of an official celebration 5 years ago, Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) continues to bring manufacturing into the spotlight and educate communities about the industry.

The goal of MFG Day is to ‘address common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn’t.”

Dispelling the myths about careers in manufacturing is something we have previously written about.  An event like MFG Day allows the industry to begin to change the perceptions or opinions of local community members, students, and educators. Through onsite experiences and the guiding principle of “seeing is believing” public opinion begins to change. Students can see how a career in manufacturing can lead to success–and that success then continues to fuel the industry. Without a strong manufacturing environment, a large piece of the economy is missing.

The theme of Opening Doors & Minds is perfect for this year’s events. Inviting the public into the manufacturing environment allows manufacturers to bring their work into the mainstream. It is extremely important to local and national economies and is a valuable source of jobs and careers.
